Shanghai, China
The Finance and Trading Centre of China

My last travel in October and November 2005 brought me also to Shanghai. Shanghai is the symbol of the prospering economocal power of China. All notables in the world opened a factory or an office in Shanghai. But this has also an disadvantage. The prices in Shanghai are expolded and you must pay a lot of attention not to spend too much money. The people changed also in Shanghai since my last visit for around 5 years. Some people wanted to invite me to a cup of coffee and they wanted to be my friend. I think they didn't have kind thoughts in their head. But this didn't make the charm of Shanghai smaller. Nanjing Road, Yu Garden or the Bund are same attractive as before.

Pudong

The view from the Bund over the Huamgpu river to Pudong. Pudong is the economical and finance centre of Shanghai. 12% of the total population of Shanghai, that are around 1,2 million inhabitants, live in this relative young quarter.
The Oriental Pearl Tower and the Jinmao skyscraper are located here. The Pearl Tower belongs to the highest TV-towers of the world and is with its special architecture the landmark of Shanghai. Its 468 meters impress each visitor. The Jinmao building is the third largest building of the world. It consists of 88 floors over a length of 420 meters.

  Pudong bei Nacht

Pudong at evening. Unfortunately is the quality of the picture not the best but you can guess the overwhelming sight of the colorful illuminated buildings.

Der Bund

The Bund is a promenade which leads along the Huangpu river. Small cafés, restaurants and stands are located there. The Bund is a favourite meeting point and is used for strolling around. Lovers meet each other during the late night and enjoy the romantic of the surrounding of the Bund.
The building of the left side is the bank of China. The building of the German Club Concordia stands at this place until 1934. The Bay of Jiaozhou was taken over by the German Empire in 1899. Germany took its place in the row of nations which maintain a concession in China. The number of German businessmen raised up to over 1000 in shortest time. This was enough to establish a German club in Shanghai. The building was with its 48 meters the largest one in Shanghai over a long range of time. The English were a little bit jealous because of this club. The whole splendor was over after Worldwar 1. Germany must give up its bases in China.

  Der Bund bei Nacht

The buildings are illuminated also at this side of the Huangpu river. The energy costs must be immensly high.

Der Bund

The old British customs hous with the clock tower and the Hongkong-Shanghai Bank with the dome are located at the Bund.

  Der Bund bei Nacht

. . . also these buildings are illuminated during the night.

Der Volksplatz

In Shanghai is a People's Square existing. The Renmin Guangchan. The People's Square is a large green island right in the middle of Shanghai and accommodates also the Shanghai Museum and an exhibition hall which documents the urban development of the city.
The People's Square was a horse racing course at the time as the English had their concession in Shanghai. Victor Ellice Sasoon, who was the owner of more than 100 horses said: "There is only one race greater than the Jews, and that's the Derby."

  Der Volksplatz

The development of the surrounding of the People's Square is also very impressive.

Der Volksplatz

The Fuzhou Lu leads from the People's Square directly to the Bund and opens the view to the Oriental Pearl Tower.

  Der Volksplatz

An interesting shopping Street is the Nanjing Road. The hotel in which I resided in the past is seen in the background. My repeated moveinto it was prevented by a price of 149 Euro per night. Exploding prices.

Der Volksplatz

The Nanjing Road during the night. The colorful illumination can't be better in cities like Hongkong.

  Der Volksplatz

It is no miracle why China has so bad energy problems. .

Der Volksplatz

This was my hotel during my last stay in Shanghai. The Yangtze Hotel In the Hangku Lu.
It was for a long time the most-modern and largest hotel after its construction. The location of the hotel is brilliant. Nanjing Road is located in the back of the hotel. The People's Square can be seen from the entrance and the Bund is around 10 minutes far away.

I visited also Malaysia and Thailand in October and November. I will report about it later.
