Buchhorn from Murrhardt to Brutus, Michigan, USA

Remark: I will mention in the following text Friedrich Christian as Friedrich.

The emigration of the family to America started with the journey of Friedrich to Petoskey, Michigan, USA in May 1882. He arrived New York as passenger on the ship "State of Nebraska" on 7. June 1882. The departure was in Glasgow. Friedrich was 35 years old and spent two years in America. Was the family of his brother-in-law Johann Georg Gottlieb Braun the reason for his stay in America? Johann was born on 17. December 1839 and emigrated to America on 16. May 1866. It is said he died on 12. April 1876. Friedrich came back to Trauzenbach in Württemberg where also his family lived in 1884 and moved to Murrhardt in 1892.

The decission to emigrate seems to be taken finally in 1895. The son Christian, 16 years old and mason as occupation, arrived Castle Garden in the harbor of New York on 12. April 1895. He was passenger of the ship "Saale" and his destination was Petoskey in Michigan.
Wilhelmine followed him two and a half years later. She arrived Ellis Island in New York with the ship "Bremen" on 21. September 1898. Her emigration began in Antwerp.
It was time for the parents Friedrich and Heinrike to follow their children. They came with the ship "Noordland" from Antwerp to New York on 26. April 1899. The departure in Antwerp was on 15. April 1899.

The next information are taken from the US censuses of the years 1900 - 1930.

In the 12. census of the year 1900 is Friedrich called Frank. Heinrike is described as mother of three children.
In the year 1906 travelled a Friedrich Buchhorn, resident of the USA, to Germany. This Friedrich was 59 years old, born in 1847, and was registered as single. An error or another Friedrich?

The next census, the 13th, took place in the year 1910.
Friedrich and Heinrike are not mentioned. Christian is 31 years old and is married with the 26 years old Freda C. Wurst. They have two sons: Adolf, 6 years old, and Gottlieb, 3 years old. Also is a Jarvis Bond mentiond. He is 16 years old and is an adopted son of Christian.

In the year 1911 again appears a Friedrich Buchhorn in the passenger lists of Ellis Island. He arrived New York with the ship "Lapland" on 11. June 1911. The departure was in Antwerp on 3. June 1911. He visited his daughter Marie in Oberroth and was 62 years old at this time. His birth year must consequently be 1949.
The brother of Friedrich Christian, Christian Friedrich, was born in 1950. He also had a daughter with name Maria Gottliebin. Did Christian Friedrich also emigrate to America?

Christian isn't mentioned in the 14th census of 1920. He passed away as young man on 14. March 1916. Freda is described as widow. She is 34 years old and has 3 children: Adolf Carl F. (16 years old), Gottlieb J. (13 years old) and Rosa Wilma (8 Jahre alt). The family lived on a farm in Maple River.
Christian's sister Wilhelmine (39 years old) married Adolf G. Wurst. He was born in Canada on 11. May 1882 but he also had German roots. Their daughter Freda was 18 years old as the census took place. Friedrich is mentioned as father in law and 74 years old widow.

In the 15th census of 1930 is the family called Buckhorn and also Buckham.
Christian's daughter Rose W. Buchhorn lived in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan und is described as niece. Rose married Harold A. Mummert and lived finally in Petoskey. They had 4 children.
Freda C. Buchhorn was mentioned as widow of Christian. She married Christian as 18 years old woman and never married again. Adolf was born on 27. July 1903 and died on 16. March 1990. He was 27 years old as the 15th census took place. He was married with the 23 years old Vivian Mary Brown. He married her as he was 22 years old. Adolf and Vivian had 2 children: Jack N. (4 years old) and Shirley M. (2 years old).

Gottlieb was born on 15. June 1906 and died on 6. September 1993. He was 23 years old in 1930. He married Irene M. Lease as he was 22 years old. Irene was 24 years old in 1930. They had a daughter with the name Muriel. Muriel married Richard Stookey and they had a daughter. The daughter was called Dawn and she still live in Brutus.

Thousands of thanks to Cindy Baublis. Cindy is a descendant of the described Buchhorn family. She could contribute a lot of information to this page. Thank you, Cindy.
Unfortunately did Cindy change her email address and I lost the contact to her. In the case you know her tell her about the page and the information, please. Please also send me her new email address. Thank you.

I also had untiring support in Germany. Erika Lanz, who is also infected by the virus of genealogy as I am, has rent the films of the Lutheran Central Archive in Stuttgart and searched for the Buchhorn family from Murrhardt. The results about the German ancestors are shown on this page. Thousands of thanks also to you, Erika.
